1 · What band 8 actually is
Read this before anything else
Listening and Reading — raw marks to bands (approximate; official conversions vary slightly by test)
| Band | Listening /40 | Academic Reading /40 | General Training Reading /40 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.0 | 39–40 | 39–40 | 40 |
| 8.5 | 37–38 | 37–38 | 39 |
| 8.0 | 35–36 | 35–36 | 37–38 |
| 7.5 | 32–34 | 33–34 | 36 |
| 7.0 | 30–31 | 30–32 | 34–35 |
| 6.5 | 26–29 | 27–29 | 32–33 |
What that means: band 8 in Listening or Academic Reading allows four or five wrong answers out of forty. In GT Reading, two or three. There is no room for careless errors — a spelling slip, a plural, an answer over the word limit each costs one of those.
Writing and Speaking — what the band 8 descriptors say, decoded
| Criterion | Band 8 in plain English | Where band 7 candidates fall short |
|---|---|---|
| Task Achievement / Response (Writing) | Every part of the task is covered fully; position is clear and developed throughout; ideas are relevant, extended and supported; Task 1 overview highlights the key features accurately | One part of the question under-developed; over-generalised examples; an overview that lists rather than selects |
| Coherence & Cohesion | Ideas sequenced logically; paragraphing is purposeful; cohesion is managed so well the reader barely notices it | Mechanical linkers (Firstly… Moreover… In conclusion) doing the work that sentence structure should do; reference errors (this/it unclear) |
| Lexical Resource | Wide range used fluently and flexibly; skilful use of uncommon items and collocation; only occasional inaccuracies in word choice | Memorised "band 9 phrases" that do not fit; wrong collocations (make a research, do a decision); repetition |
| Grammatical Range & Accuracy | Wide range of structures; the majority of sentences are error-free; errors are rare and do not impede | Range is there but frequent small errors: articles, prepositions, subject–verb agreement, comma splices |
| Fluency & Coherence (Speaking) | Speaks at length with only occasional repetition or self-correction; hesitation is for ideas, not words; topics developed coherently | Hesitation for language; short answers; over-reliance on "you know", "like" |
| Pronunciation | Wide range of features (stress, intonation, chunking) used flexibly; easy to understand throughout; L1 accent has minimal effect | Individual sounds fine but flat intonation and misplaced word stress; features used but not sustained |
2 · The test
| Module | Time | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | ~30 min + 10 min transfer (paper) / 2 min check (computer) | 4 parts, 40 questions, heard once. Parts 1–2 everyday, 3–4 academic. Accents: British, Australian, NZ, North American. |
| Reading | 60 min, no transfer time | 3 passages (Academic) or 3 sections (GT), 40 questions. |
| Writing | 60 min | Task 1 (150+ words, 20 min): Academic = describe a chart/process/map; GT = a letter. Task 2 (250+ words, 40 min): essay — same for both. Task 2 counts double. |
| Speaking | 11–14 min | Face-to-face (or video call) with an examiner: Part 1 interview (4–5 min), Part 2 long turn from a cue card (1 min prep, 1–2 min talk), Part 3 discussion (4–5 min). May be on a different day. |
Academic or General Training?
- Academic — university admission (your master's). Reading passages are academic; Task 1 is a chart/process/map.
- General Training — Canadian immigration (Express Entry, PR). Reading uses everyday and workplace texts; Task 1 is a letter. GT Reading needs a higher raw score for the same band.
- You will most likely sit both at different times. Listening, Speaking and Task 2 are identical, so 80% of this course serves both; the Reading and Task 1 modules cover both variants.
Paper or computer?
- Computer-delivered (recommended): typing your essays with a word count, headphones for Listening, results in 3–5 days, more test dates. The Listening "transfer time" is replaced by 2 minutes to check.
- Paper: handwriting counts; illegible = unmarked. Results in ~13 days.
- One Skill Retake lets you re-sit a single module within 60 days of a full test — check whether your Dhaka centre offers it; for a band-8-everywhere goal it is very useful.
In Dhaka
- British Council and IDP both run IELTS in Dhaka (and Chattogram, Sylhet). Fees are roughly BDT 22,000–27,000 — verify; they change yearly.
- Book 3–5 weeks ahead for popular dates. Speaking may be scheduled on a different day, or by video call.
- Bring the passport you registered with. Nothing else goes into the room.
3 · What Canada actually needs
| CLB | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Express Entry effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | Minimum for FSW; modest points |
| 8 | 7.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | Better transferability points |
| 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | Unlocks the top skill-transferability tiers (+50 with a degree, +50 with foreign work) |
| 10 | 8.5 | 8.0 | 7.5 | 7.5 | A few more core points per ability |
IELTS General Training is the accepted test for Express Entry (Academic is not). Your target of 8.0 in every module gives CLB 9 in Listening and CLB 10 in Reading, Writing and Speaking — comfortably above the threshold where the big transferability bonuses switch on. Listening 8.5 would make it CLB 10 across the board; it is worth aiming for, since Listening is the module most improvable by practice.
For the master's (Academic)
- Most Canadian master's programmes ask for 6.5–7.0 overall with no band below 6.0–6.5; some engineering and business programmes want 7.0 overall. Band 8 across is far above any admission threshold and strengthens a scholarship application.
- Post-graduation work permit language requirement (CLB 7 for university graduates) is also met by these scores.
- Results are valid for two years for both IRCC and universities. Time the GT sitting so that it is still valid when you submit your Express Entry profile; sit the Academic first, for admissions.
4 · The Bengali-speaker error profile — the fastest marks you will ever gain
Thirty errors that recur in Bangladeshi candidates' scripts and speech at bands 6.5–7.5. Fix these and you remove most of the "frequent small errors" that block Grammatical Range & Accuracy 8.

5 · How to use this course
- Modules 01–05 each follow the same order: format → what band 8 requires in that module → technique by question/task type → the Bengali-speaker traps for that module → graded practice with answers and explanations → model answers annotated for band-8 features → a self-review method.
- Module 06 is the language engine: topic vocabulary with collocations, paraphrase banks, and the grammar structures that produce "range" — with error-correction drills.
- Module 07 is two complete tests (one Academic, one GT) with answer keys, band conversion and marking guides for Writing and Speaking.
- Module 08 has the day-by-day plans, a tickable tracker, and calculators: raw score → band, four bands → overall, and a Writing self-assessment estimator.
- Exercises are self-checking: type, click Check answers. Green = correct; orange = correct word, spelling or punctuation slip (in the real test that is wrong — treat orange as red); red = wrong, answer shown.
- Listening uses your browser's English voices (Chrome, Edge, Safari). You can choose British or Australian on most items. Play each recording once, as in the test; replay only when reviewing.
- Writing boxes count words live. Timers are on every practice task — use them from day one.
- Speaking: the examiner's questions play aloud; record yourself on your phone, then compare with the model and the pronunciation notes.
- Progress ticks are saved in this browser per page.
6 · Diagnostic first
Before the plan, know your number. Take Cambridge IELTS 18 or 19, Test 1 (the official past papers — buy the book or use the audio and PDF that come with it) under exact test conditions in one sitting, or use Practice Test A here. Score Listening and Reading with the tables above. For Writing and Speaking, use the estimators in Module 08 — and if at all possible, pay for one professional marking of the two essays; it is the single best-value spend in IELTS preparation.
| Diagnostic result | Plan | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| L & R ≥ 7.5; W & S ≈ 7.0 | 8-week intensive (15 h/week) | Precision in L/R (zero careless errors); Writing accuracy and Task Response; Speaking pronunciation features |
| L & R 6.5–7.0; W & S 6.0–6.5 | 12-week plan (10–12 h/week) | Weeks 1–4 technique + error profile; 5–10 volume practice; 11–12 tests and review |
| Any module below 6.0 | 12 weeks + Module 06 first, and a general English course alongside | Vocabulary and grammar foundations before exam technique — technique cannot substitute for language |
7 · The plans in one view
8-week intensive · ~15 h/week
- Weeks 1–2: Modules 01–05 read in full; error profile established; one practice essay and one recorded Part 2 every day; Listening/Reading technique drills.

- Weeks 6–7: Full tests under conditions twice a week; timed writing; speaking mocks; Module 06 drills for your remaining error types only.
- Week 8: Taper. One full test, light review, sleep. Test.
12-week plan · ~10–12 h/week
- Weeks 1–4: One module a week (L, R, W, S) with Module 06 alongside; one essay and two speaking recordings a week.

- Weeks 9–10: Full tests weekly; review; targeted drills.
- Weeks 11–12: Two full tests, taper, test.
The day-by-day version, with a tickable tracker, is in Module 08. দিন ধরে ধরে পরিকল্পনা ও ট্র্যাকার Module 08-এ।
8 · Resources worth your money and time
- Cambridge IELTS 14–19 (Academic) and the GT volumes — official past papers. Nothing else is real test material; buy at least two books. Do every test under conditions.
- ielts.org sample tests and the free Road to IELTS access that comes with a British Council booking.
- IELTS Liz (ieltsliz.com) — the clearest free explanations of Task 1 and Task 2, with band-9 samples.
- IELTS Simon (ielts-simon.com archive) — former examiner; the "simple, clear, correct" band-9 writing model this course follows.
- Cambridge Grammar for IELTS and Cambridge Vocabulary for IELTS Advanced — if Module 06 shows gaps.
- Listening input: BBC Radio 4, ABC Radio National (Australia), TED talks with transcripts, BBC 6 Minute English for warm-ups. Thirty minutes a day of unsubtitled British/Australian speech.
- Reading input: The Economist, The Guardian Long Read, New Scientist, National Geographic — the register and topics of Academic Reading.
- Speaking practice: a tutor (italki, Preply) twice a week is worth more than any app; otherwise a serious exchange partner. Record everything.
- Writing correction: a qualified marker for at least six essays over the plan. Self-correction plateaus at band 7.
- Dhaka: British Council library and free IELTS seminars; IDP mock tests; Saifur's University / Mentors' etc. run classes — check the teacher's own band and experience before paying.
9 · Setup checklist
Test the English voice
Click → British · Australian. No sound → switch to Chrome, Edge or Safari.
Take the diagnostic under real conditions and write the four numbers down
Cambridge 18/19 Test 1, or Practice Test A in Module 07. No pausing, no dictionary, one sitting.
Choose the plan (8 or 12 weeks) and put the test date in your calendar
Book the test now: a booked date is the only reliable motivation. Academic first (admissions), GT later, timed for the Express Entry profile.
Print the error profile (section 4) and start an error log
A notebook or spreadsheet: date · module · error · correct form · why. Review it every Sunday.
Arrange correction
A tutor or marker for Writing and Speaking — even six sessions over the plan. Without external correction, Writing 8 is very unlikely.
Set up daily input
Thirty minutes of British/Australian audio and one long article a day, starting today. Open Module 01.
